The Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) has stated that the global movement away from fossil fuels toward renewable energy is unavoidable—and Nigeria must ensure the transition is managed well to avoid deepening energy poverty. Dr Orji Ogbonnaya Orji, NEITI’s Executive Secretary, made this point at a September 2025 roundtable in Abuja, presenting interim findings of a study on how the energy shift will affect Nigeria’s economy. He noted that around **86 million Nigerians** currently lack reliable power, warning that poor transition planning could worsen their access to electricity. He added that the transition carries risks for jobs, infrastructure, government revenue, and host communities.

Alongside acknowledging risks, NEITI emphasised the opportunities this transition could bring—innovation, economic diversification, and repositioning key sectors of the economy. The study (supported by the Ford Foundation) is grounded in NEITI’s policies on climate change, energy transition, and environmental accountability. It commits to tracking emissions, stranded assets, and government compliance with transition pledges. Dr Orji called on all stakeholders—civil society, media, industry players, development partners—to ensure the process is transparent, equitable, and inclusive.
