– First Domestic Petrol Production in Decades Eases Fuel Scarcity
– Price Cuts & CNG Distribution Rollout Boost Sector Resilience
– Over 1.1 Billion Litres Exported, Thousands of Jobs Created
Aliko Dangote, President/CEO of Dangote Petroleum Refinery, has declared that fuel queues—a problem plaguing Nigeria since 1975—have been effectively ended since his refinery started producing petrol on 15 September 2024. The facility, with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, has not only stabilized domestic supply but also lowered pump prices in regions like the Southwest, Abuja, Delta, Rivers, Edo, and Kwara from nearly ₦1,100 to around ₦841 per litre. Between June and early September 2025, Dangote Refinery also exported more than 1.1 billion litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), underscoring its ability to serve both domestic needs and foreign exchange objectives.
The refinery is rolling out 4,000 CNG-powered trucks nationwide to improve fuel distribution efficiency and create nearly 24,000 jobs in sectors such as driving, mechanics, fleet management, and logistics. Dangote emphasised that the refinery has not displaced workers—instead, employment conditions are favourable, with salaries reportedly three times the minimum wage, plus benefits such as life insurance, health coverage for families, and pensions. While the refinery has not entered the retail business, it is partnering with marketers and facilitators to ensure fuel gets from the refinery to filling stations smoothly. The company also plans to scale its capacity to 700,000 barrels per day in its second year.
