– Nigeria Hosts Local Celebrations Including Institute Inauguration & River Cleanups
World Rivers Day, now celebrating its 20th anniversary, sees participation from over 100 countries across six continents, with communities organizing events—both in-person and online—to raise awareness about river conservation, restoration, and sustainable use. This global observance underscores how waterways are deeply tied to biodiversity, livelihoods, cultural values, climate resilience, and human health. The theme “Waterways in Our Communities” invites reflection on how rivers shape local identity and wellbeing while demanding action to protect them from pollution, unsafe development, and climate threats.
In Nigeria, for example, World Rivers Day activities include the inauguration of the River Ethiope Basin Institute (REBI) at Delta State University, Abraka, youth competitions (essay, quiz, art), river clean-ups, fishing competitions, and stakeholder engagements focused on forming river protection agreements. The Federal Ministry of Water Resources and upper basin communities of the Benue River are also planning programs as part of the local observance. These local actions align with the global momentum pushing for inclusive river management and community stewardship.
