A new initiative called “NextGen Energy Champions: Raising Africa’s Next Energy Sustainability Champions” has been launched in Abuja to tackle energy waste, focusing on behavior change and efficiency. The program trained 50 students drawn from five secondary schools in the capital, with Energy Savers Nigeria, Seedbuilders Innovation Hub, and NIGENIUS Technologies Limited* collaborating on the effort. At its unveiling in Wuse 2, National Project Coordinator Adeniyi Adeboye emphasized that while much discussion centers on power generation, efficient energy use is just as critical—saving money, reducing waste, and helping stabilize Nigeria’s fragile energy grid.
The training goes beyond theory—students will be certified as Energy Champions by NIGENIUS Technologies and taught practical skills such as clean technology adoption, energy conservation, and climate advocacy. Olaoluwa Olorunnisomo of Seedbuilders said the initiative includes hackathons where students will propose real-solutions to energy challenges in their own communities. The Abuja pilot is just the start; the program aims to expand by establishing student-led Energy Savers Clubs in every one of Nigeria’s 774 local government areas, reaching over one million students nationwide.
