During a live appearance on TVC’s Your View, Lagos State’s Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transitioning from a linear “collect and dump” model to a circular economy for waste management. He highlighted that 55% of organic waste is now being converted into compost fertilizer, and plastics are being repurposed into durable waste bins, epitomizing the “waste-to-wealth” ethos set to underpin Lagos’s environmental future.

Mr. Wahab also addressed public concerns about odors near landfill zones like Olusosun and Solous III, stressing that such issues are common for megacities and not indicative of broader environmental decline. He underscored the state’s enforcement drive, citing the arrest of a luxury car owner for illegal waste dumping and unveiling a proactive whistleblower policy to deter offenders swiftly. With around 250 waste collection trucks supporting PSP operators, the administration continues to push for behavioral change and public compliance. He candidly noted, “Lagos is not Eldorado yet,” but affirmed that sustained efforts are under way to make the city cleaner, safer, and more sustainable.
