– Urbanisation Surge Hits Nigeria’s Infrastructure Deficit
– Climate Change Adds Pressure to Engineering and Planning
– Call for Climate-Resilient Infrastructure Becomes Vital
Dr. Ibrahim Lawal, a Senior Lecturer at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, emphasized on August 30, 2025, that Nigeria is struggling to reconcile the rapid pace of urbanisation with its infrastructure demands. Presenting at the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) Bauchi branch AGM and public lecture, he highlighted how soaring population growth is pushing both engineering and planning sectors to the brink. Lawal called on governments at all levels to make infrastructure a core part of climate action strategies, underscoring the growing complexity of Nigeria’s urban challenges.
In his presentation titled “Building an Environmentally Sustainable and Resilient Future; The Nexus of Climate Change, Infrastructure and Engineering in Nigeria”, Lawal outlined the dual nature of the urbanisation-climate nexus: though it poses serious challenges, it also offers a chance to pursue innovative, green, and resilient infrastructure approaches. The Emir of Bauchi, represented at the event, reinforced the urgency—calling climate-resilient infrastructure a matter of survival, progress, and continuity. He urged engineers, policymakers, and communities alike to collaboratively rethink planning, design, and maintenance of vital structures.
