To combat Nigeria’s escalating extreme-heat threat, TECA Heat Action Wave (THAW)—a pioneering initiative—has been launched by BFA Global, FSD Africa, the ClimateWorks Foundation, and the UK’s FCDO Nigeria. The effort dedicates $1.1 million toward empowering 12 early-stage climate ventures with seed capital and venture-building support to develop innovative, locally-grounded solutions to shield heat-vulnerable communities.
African cities like Lagos, Kano, and Abuja are witnessing heat indices soaring beyond 50 °C, with over 60% of the population regularly exposed to dangerous temperatures. THAW targets this urgent challenge by supporting ventures in areas such as early warning systems, parametric heat insurance, emergency-focused fintech, and other ecosystem enablers that help individuals and small businesses adapt and thrive amid surging heat.
Beyond just funding, THAW offers hands-on venture-building services—granting startups access to product design sprints, business model refinement, technical and gender-aware mentorship, and support for market testing. The program will run into mid-2026, culminating in investor demo days, with promising ventures eligible for extended support in 2027.
