At a recent event in Lagos—the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Empowerment Programme—the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, reiterated that empowering women is central to Nigeria’s progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). She emphasized that providing women with economic tools and opportunities is a proven strategy for accelerating gender equity, employment, and national growth.
The initiative distributed empowerment items—including gas cookers, deep-chest freezers, grinding machines, and generators—to 1,000 women in the South-West, as part of a broader plan to support 18,500 women nationwide. Each woman in the North-Central zone was also targeted to receive similar tools to boost their businesses and livelihoods.
First Lady Tinubu underscored the alignment of this initiative with Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the broader UN SDGs, particularly:
- – SDG 5 (Gender Equality) – achieving equality and empowering all women and girls
- – SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) – promoting sustained economic empowerment By equipping women with tangible resources, the programme lays a foundation for sustainable livelihoods, community cohesion, and national prosperity.
