– Nigeria represented in elite global IPCC author team
– IPCC expands diversity: 51% from developing nations
– AR7 author selection boosts African scientific inclusion
A historic announcement by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) confirmed that 664 experts from 111 countries have been appointed as Coordinating Lead Authors, Lead Authors, and Review Editors for its Seventh Assessment Report (AR7)
The author cohort demonstrates a significant step forward in diversity:
– Over 51% of selected authors hail from developing countries or economies in transition, up from 44% in the AR6 cycle.
– A near gender balance has been achieved with 46% female representation, compared to just 33% in AR6.
– Notably, eight Nigerians are among those appointed, marking a strong showing for the country in global climate science leadership.
With the author teams now in place, AR7 work will begin in earnest. Authors will assess scientific literature aligned with the Working Groups’ outlines (finalized in February 2025 in Hangzhou, China), with the first Lead Author meeting scheduled for early December. The three Working Group reports are expected to start rolling out in mid-2028, followed by the Synthesis Report in late 2029.
