– African unity at plastic treaty talks
– SRADev backs 50% plastic production cut by 2030
– Funding, toxic bans & just transition for Africa in INC‑5.2
Ahead of and during the INC‑5.2 session in Geneva (August 5–14, 2025), Dr. Leslie Adogame, Executive Director of SRADev Nigeria, called on African negotiators to present a unified voice, firmly anchored in continental priorities laid out in UNEA mandates. He warned against fragmentation and urged adherence to the agreed Chair’s Text as the starting point for negotiations.
Dr. Adogame highlighted several non-negotiable priorities for the continent: A global cap on virgin plastic production, aiming for a 50% reduction by 2030—supported by over 100 countries and 1,100 scientists. Establishment of a dedicated financial mechanism and secretariat, with binding contributions from wealthy nations, to support implementation in developing countries. Strict controls on toxic additives in plastics and the protection of informal waste workers through a just transition. Reduction in plastic waste trade and alignment of national action plans with regional African strategies like the AMCEN framework.
