At the 2025 SPE Nigeria Annual International Conference and Exhibition (NAICE) in Lagos on August 5, the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) lauded Shell’s $5 billion Final Investment Decision (FID) on the Bonga North deep-water project. Dr Amina Danmiani, chair of SPE Nigeria, highlighted the project’s significance—with over 300 million barrels of recoverable oil equivalent and expected peak production of 110,000 bpd—as a major boost to the nation’s energy sector and long-term industry confidence.

Shell also received a special award at the conference opening for the landmark FID, with Executive Vice President Marno de Jong reaffirming the company’s commitment to Nigeria through taxes, local contracting, and social investments. The project underscores Shell’s sustained role in powering Nigeria’s growth while aligning with broader goals of sustainable energy development
