Communities across Bayelsa and Delta States in the Niger Delta have united to demand concrete action on climate change, including development of functional waste-management systems, greater access to clean water, restoration of ecosystems, and community-led climate resilience planning. Delegates at the Niger Delta Climate Change Conference 2025 described the region as the “epicentre of environmental injustice,” highlighting persistent oil spills, gas flaring, polluted water, and declining freshwater ecosystems despite minimal contribution to global emissions.
Speakers—including women leaders, youth groups, legal experts, and traditional authorities—presented a comprehensive five-point agenda calling for immediate environmental cleanup of polluted lands and mangroves, independent health audits, legal reparations from oil companies, support for women’s and youth climate leadership, and an industry-wide halt to new fossil fuel projects. They also demanded a formal Niger Delta Climate Justice Action Plan aligned with Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), to be taken forward at platforms like COP30 and the Africa Climate Summit.
