Abia and Imo State governments have activated coordinated flood mitigation efforts as Nigeria enters its peak rainy season. Abia State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), working closely with NEMA, has initiated community-level “downscaling”—an early warning education campaign—targeting high-risk LGAs such as Aba North, Isiala Ngwa, Umuahia, and Ukwa East/West. In addition, Abia’s Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) is carrying out drainage desilting, stormwater clearing, and strict enforcement against illegal construction on floodplains, while stockpiling relief materials and preparing resettlement centres like Mgbarakuma for potential evacuations.

In Imo State, NEMA’s Owerri Zonal Office has secured relief camps, medical supplies, tents, and even a new ambulance. The agency conducted stakeholder trainings on flood response, first aid, evacuation, and camp management. The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and state authorities have launched safety-awareness campaigns around Oguta Lake, urging residents to avoid night travel on waterways and to use life jackets. Officials emphasized the importance of early relocation, go-bags, and respecting official alerts to minimize flood-related harm.
