Communities from Uganda to the Democratic Republic of Congo gathered to mark the first anniversary of the REPower Afrika campaign, uniting civil society, frontline groups, and youth leaders in mobilisations under the AfrikaVuka platform. Events in Hoima (Uganda), Tanga (Tanzania), and Kinshasa saw residents affected by the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) share their experiences and envision a new energy future—anchored in solar power, community ownership, and social resilience. Participants engaged in storytelling sessions, calls to action, and public forums that underscored the campaign’s value in redefining energy through justice and local empowerment.

Since its launch in mid-2024 by 350Africa.org and partners, REPower Afrika has pressed urgently for investments in decentralized renewable energy to benefit communities directly. It advocates that governments end support for fossil fuel projects like the EACOP and instead back community-led solar mini-grid systems that deliver electricity to rural homes, schools, and small businesses. These platforms not only light up homes but also create green jobs, reduce climate vulnerability, and build equitable prosperity through social ownership. As the campaign continues to scale across more African countries, participants reiterated their demand: no more pipelines—only energy that fuels justice, dignity, and African-led progress.
