The Department of Climate Change (DCC) under the Federal Ministry of Environment, in partnership with the Society for Planet and Prosperity (SPP) has officially launched the second edition of the Subnational Climate Governance Performance Ranking across Nigeria’s 36 states. The revamped initiative kicked off on June 24, 2025 with a virtual workshop attended by over 40 climate desk officers, commissioners, permanent secretaries, and focal persons to introduce the updated methodology and project calendar. DCC Director Dr Iniobong Abiola‑Awe emphasized the ranking’s role as a vital tool for capturing best practices, identifying capacity gaps, and informing national climate strategies.

Building on the inaugural ranking’s success—which in 2024 saw top performers such as Lagos, Gombe, Ebonyi, Borno, and Ekiti—SPP President Prof Chukwumerije Okereke announced several key enhancements for the new cycle. These include the formation of a review and quality-assurance panel featuring local and international experts, mandatory sign-off from state commissioners or permanent secretaries, and greater weight given to actual project implementation. In addition, a series of capacity-building workshops will equip state officers with tools for data collection, analysis, and collaboration—with discussions underway to introduce awards or incentives from international development partners to recognise outstanding states.
