– DCC and SPP host national workshop to deepen state-level climate governance assessment.
– New methodology includes review panel, commissioner sign-off, and focus on implementation.
– Capacity-building for desk officers backed by performance incentives from international partners.
The Department of Climate Change (DCC) under the Federal Ministry of Environment and the Society for Planet and Prosperity (SPP) have officially launched the second subnational Climate Governance Performance Ranking. The initiative kicked off on June 24, 2025, with a virtual workshop for over 40 state climate officers—including desk officers, commissioners, and permanent secretaries—to introduce enhancements in methodology and set the project timeline. According to DCC Director Dr. Iniobong Abiola‑Awe, the ranking tool is instrumental in promoting best practices at the state level, producing data to inform national climate policy, and reinforcing the importance of inclusive, transparent, and effective governance mechanisms.
Building on last year’s success, SPP President Prof. Chukwumerije Okereke announced the introduction of a high-calibre review and quality assurance panel and a requirement that one submission per state receives formal endorsement from either the commissioner or permanent secretary. The revised ranking methodology will now place greater weight on actual project implementation, with organisers discussing rewards for top performers with international partners. In tandem, the DCC and SPP are rolling out a series of capacity-building workshops to equip state-level officers with the skills needed to gather accurate data and foster collaboration.
