In Lagos, WaterAid officially launched the Danida Project on June 26, 2025, partnering with Denmark’s aid agency to tackle period poverty** by enhancing local production and sales of safe, recyclable sanitary pads. Grace Uwadiale of WaterAid explained that the initiative integrates clean water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) with human-rights and green-growth objectives, promoting climate resilience through innovative WASH technologies and sustainable menstrual products. Special sanitary pads will be produced locally, creating skills and jobs for women in manufacturing and enabling a commercially viable, eco-friendly business.
Government officials lauded the project’s dual benefits for health and economic empowerment. Mahmood Adegbite of the Ministry of Environment emphasized that locally manufactured pads support job creation and the green transition, while Rianat Onigbanjo from the Ministry of Women Affairs highlighted the project’s potential to reduce reproductive tract infections through improved menstrual knowledge. With strong backing from Lagos state ministries, the Danida Project is expected to boost menstrual hygiene access, enhance women’s dignity, and foster sustainable livelihoods across Nigeria.
