– Urgent action demanded on conflict-driven hunger crises
The UN’s FAO-WFP Hunger Hotspots report has flagged 13 regions facing escalating food crises, with Gaza, Sudan, South Sudan, Haiti, and Mali at imminent risk of famine in the next five months. Conflict, climate shocks, and economic disruptions—compounded by funding shortfalls and restricted aid access—are fueling the worsening hunger situation.
In Sudan, nearly 25 million people are experiencing acute food insecurity with famine conditions persisting in parts of Darfur. Gaza likewise faces acute food shortages; nearly half a million people are projected to reach famine-like conditions by September.
The UN urges massive, timely investment in agricultural support, peace dialogues, and humanitarian aid to prevent widespread starvation.
