Brazil has announced that Ambassador André Aranha Corrêa do Lago, currently serving as Brazil’s Secretary for Climate, Energy, and Environment, will preside over COP30, the UN Climate Change Conference scheduled for November 2025 in Belém. A seasoned multilateral negotiator with experience dating back to 2001, Corrêa do Lago previously led Brazil’s climate diplomacy and will bring his expertise to ensure COP30 delivers concrete outcomes. Joining him as executive director is Ana Toni, Secretary of Climate Change at Brazil’s Environment Ministry.
Climate advocates have welcomed the appointments with cautious optimism. Natalie Unterstell of the Talanoa Institute described Corrêa do Lago’s leadership as “essential to translate global ambition into measurable results,” emphasizing that COP30 must go beyond rhetoric to drive action—especially in advancing adaptation efforts in cities and embedding Amazon-region priorities into the agenda.
