The Federal Government of Nigeria has secured a $134 million loan from the African Development Bank (AfDB) to enhance food security and agricultural productivity. This funding, under the National Agricultural Growth Support Scheme – Agro Pocket (NAGS-AP) Project, aims to support both dry and wet season farming, focusing on staple crops such as wheat, rice, maize, sorghum, soybean, and cassava.
The initiative targets 250,000 wheat farmers to cultivate 250,000 hectares, expecting an output of 750,000 metric tons, and 150,000 rice farmers across all 37 states, including the FCT, with an anticipated yield of 450,000 metric tons. The program also plans to provide subsidized inputs and quality seeds to farmers, aiming to reduce reliance on imports and strengthen national food reserves.
