U-Recycle Initiative Africa, a youth-led environmental NGO, has unveiled the second phase of its PlasticWize Fellowship—PlasticWize 2.0—aimed at curbing plastic pollution in Nigerian universities. Building on the success of its inaugural 2022 program, this initiative focuses on fostering systemic and behavioral changes to promote sustainable campus environments.
Key Highlights:
Expanded Fellowship: PlasticWize 2.0 has selected eight fellows from four prominent Nigerian universities: Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), University of Benin (UNIBEN), Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), and University of Lagos (UNILAG). Each institution is represented by two fellows, supported by four lecturers serving as campus advisors.
Comprehensive Training: The program commenced with a four-day Campus Leaders Training in Abuja, featuring over 20 sessions led by 18 experts. Topics covered included circular economy principles, sustainable waste management, project execution, and grant writing.
Innovative Approaches: The initiative employs creative strategies such as installing “talking bins” to encourage waste reduction, developing gamified learning platforms, and conducting research expeditions to raise awareness and drive action against plastic pollution.
Previous Impact: The first phase of the fellowship engaged over 2,000 students across 100 universities, emphasizing capacity-building and behavioral change to address marine plastic pollution.
