The Petroleum, Environment and Solid Minerals Degradation Awareness Association (PESMDAA) has raised concerns over escalating environmental degradation in Nigeria, particularly in regions affected by petroleum and solid mineral extraction. During the inauguration of its Bauchi State and local government executives on May 27, 2025, National Chairman Dr. Robert Adah, represented by Dr. James Ugah, emphasized the urgent need for awareness and advocacy to combat the negative environmental impacts of resource exploitation.
Dr. Adah highlighted that while the petroleum industry has been a cornerstone of Nigeria’s economy, providing energy and employment, it also poses significant environmental risks that must be managed responsibly. He noted that the solid minerals sector, though economically promising, has been plagued by irregularities and unsustainable practices, endangering both the environment and local livelihoods.
The event, themed “Sensitisation to Eliminate Degradation and Irregularities in the Petroleum and Solid Minerals Sectors,” also featured remarks from Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, represented by Deputy Commissioner Mohammed Hassan. He called for collaboration among government, industry, and civil society to enforce stricter regulations, invest in sustainable technologies, and promote policies prioritizing environmental health.
Mr. Yusuf Ishiyaku, the newly inaugurated State Commissioner of PESMDAA, reiterated the task force’s commitment to engaging communities and institutions at all levels. He announced plans to extend awareness campaigns to schools, religious centers, markets, and other public spaces to ensure widespread participation in environmental protection efforts.
