The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has revealed that over 1.2 million Nigerians were displaced by devastating floods in 2024, with 1,237 reported deaths and more than 16,000 injuries. The disaster impacted 5.2 million people across 29 states, destroying homes and damaging over 1.4 million hectares of farmland. In Borno State, the collapse of the Alau Dam submerged large parts of Maiduguri, displacing nearly 2 million people and triggering a cholera outbreak. In response, NEMA launched early warning systems and sensitization campaigns to reduce the flood’s impact, especially in high-risk communities. Despite these efforts, challenges such as poor infrastructure and limited resources continue to hinder effective disaster management. The agency emphasized the urgent need for stronger flood resilience strategies nationwide.
