The Kwara State House of Assembly Committee on Agriculture and Food Security has pledged to collaborate with civil society organizations (CSOs) and women farmers to bolster food security in the state. This commitment was made during an advocacy visit by the Budget Committee Group (BCG), which presented its analysis of the 2025 agriculture budget. Committee Chairperson Mrs. Ayi Olatundun emphasized the Assembly’s readiness to partner with non-governmental organizations to ensure the thriving of agriculture in Kwara State.

BCG Coordinator Mr. Abdurrahman Ayuba highlighted concerns over the declining budgetary allocation to agriculture, noting that the 2025 allocation is lower than that of 2024, which was already below the 10% benchmark set by the Maputo Declaration. He advocated for increased funding, particularly for smallholder women farmers, and emphasized the importance of inclusive budget planning that considers farmers with disabilities.

The Assembly’s commitment aligns with broader efforts by the Kwara State Government to enhance agricultural productivity and food sufficiency. Initiatives include partnerships with organizations like HerVest to provide financial support and training to women farmers, as well as collaborations with the Centre for African Leaders in Agriculture (CALA) to promote the soybeans value chain.
