The Lagos State Government is intensifying efforts to address coastal erosion by forming strategic partnerships, notably with the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Yacoob Alebiosu, highlighted plans to implement advanced groin technology—structures designed to prevent beach erosion—in vulnerable communities such as Idotun, Origanrigan, and Olomowewe in Ibeju-Lekki. The state estimates a requirement of approximately ₦1.2 trillion to protect a 42-kilometer stretch of coastline, necessitating the construction of about 105 groins.
In addition to technological solutions, Lagos is collaborating with WaterAid Nigeria and the Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance (ORRAA) through the Lagos State Partnership for Coastal Resilience Initiative. This initiative aims to deploy nature-based solutions and establish a consultative platform to enhance community engagement and develop strategies for effective coastal management. Financial support from the UK’s Blue Planet Fund is facilitating these efforts, which focus on strengthening the resilience of coastal communities and promoting sustainable economic activities.
