Iraq has unveiled a comprehensive climate project pipeline under its Green Climate Fund (GCF) Country Programme, aiming to enhance climate adaptation and mitigation efforts across key sectors. This initiative focuses on agriculture, water resources, energy, and transportation, aligning with Iraq’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The programme builds upon the GCF’s initial $39 million investment in the “Strengthening Climate Resilience of Vulnerable Agriculture Livelihoods” project, which seeks to improve the livelihoods of two million Iraqis through better water management and renewable energy integration.
The Iraqi government, in collaboration with the GCF and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), is developing bankable proposals to attract further investments. These projects aim to address the country’s escalating climate risks, including rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, and reduced water availability from the Euphrates and Tigris rivers. By focusing on transformative policy reforms and the adoption of sustainable technologies, Iraq seeks to bolster its food security, economic stability, and overall climate resilience.
