Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man and President of Dangote Industries, recently acknowledged the immense challenges faced during the construction of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos. Speaking to members of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Dangote admitted that if he had fully grasped the project’s magnitude and complexities, he might have reconsidered initiating it. The refinery, designed to process 650,000 barrels of crude oil daily, encountered significant obstacles, including constructing on swampy terrain, extensive land clearing, and dredging 65 million cubic meters of sand from 20 kilometers offshore. Despite these hurdles, Dangote emphasized the project’s commitment to preserving local fishing communities and the environment.

Beyond its industrial ambitions, the refinery project has been a catalyst for local capacity building. Originally projected to employ up to 50,000 foreign workers, the project ultimately engaged only 12,000–14,000 expatriates, with the majority of the workforce comprising Nigerian professionals. Dangote highlighted that 85% of the commissioning work was executed by Nigerians, showcasing the nation’s engineering prowess. He expressed a vision for Nigeria to transition from merely exporting oil to exporting knowledge and skills, underscoring the importance of training and empowering local engineers for future projects.
