At the 79th United Nations General Assembly, Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, reaffirmed the nation’s dedication to international peace and security. Highlighting Nigeria’s participation in 41 UN peacekeeping missions since 1960 and the deployment of over 200,000 troops, Badaru emphasized the country’s significant contributions to global stability. He called for the reform of the UN Security Council to include permanent African representation, arguing that such inclusion would enhance global governance and reflect Africa’s role in peacekeeping efforts.

Badaru also addressed emerging security challenges, particularly in the Sahel region, urging the international community to intensify efforts against the proliferation of small arms and light weapons. He advocated for the operationalization of the African Standby Force and the establishment of counterterrorism centers of excellence across Africa. Reiterating Nigeria’s commitment to combating transnational organized crime, he called for comprehensive strategies to address illegal financial flows and the alliances between bandits and terrorists.
