In a concerted effort to combat climate change and promote environmental sustainability, UNICEF has partnered with the Katsina State Government to launch the Green Rising 9ja movement. This initiative aims to empower youth across the state by engaging them in activities such as tree planting, plastic waste management, and climate education. Approximately 30 youth groups, comprising around 100 participants, attended a recent sensitization workshop held at the State Secretariat Conference Hall in Katsina. The workshop focused on raising awareness about climate change impacts and encouraging proactive community involvement.
UNICEF’s Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Programme Officer, Mrs. Stella Terver, emphasized the importance of youth participation in environmental initiatives. She highlighted the potential for young people to transform plastic waste into valuable resources, fostering entrepreneurship and innovation. The Green Rising 9ja movement, part of UNICEF’s Generation Unlimited (GenU) initiative, aspires to mobilize and support 10 million children and young people in developing countries to take grassroots action against climate change by 2025.
The Katsina State Government has shown strong support for the initiative, with plans to plant one million trees and remove illegal structures in dam areas to prevent flooding. The collaboration between UNICEF and the state government aims to create a resilient environment and equip youths with the necessary skills to address climate-related challenges effectively.
