The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has sounded the alarm over the escalating crisis of internal displacement, revealing that a record 83.4 million people were living in internal displacement by the end of 2024. This marks an increase of 7.5 million from the previous year, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive and coordinated global action to address the root causes and consequences of displacement.

According to the Global Report on Internal Displacement 2025 (GRID), disasters were the primary drivers of new displacements in 2024, accounting for a staggering 45.8 million cases—nearly double the annual average of the past decade. Cyclones alone were responsible for 54% of these disaster-induced displacements. Conflict-related displacements also remained significant, with 20.1 million new cases recorded, nearly half of which originated from Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

IOM Director-General Amy Pope emphasized the necessity of preventive measures, stating, “The report is a call for preventive action, to use data and other tools to anticipate displacement before it happens.” She highlighted the importance of collaboration between humanitarian and development sectors, along with governments, to develop long-term solutions that prevent displacement and support affected populations.

The IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM), the world’s largest source of primary data on internal displacement, played a crucial role in compiling the GRID report. The organization aims to maintain strong evidence-based reporting to identify effective interventions and inform policy decisions in the coming years.
