Professor Oluyemisi Fawole of the Department of Agronomy at the University of Ilorin has emphasized the importance of adopting natural solutions to enhance both human health and environmental sustainability. In her inaugural lecture titled “Intimate Strangers In Soil and Agricultural Sustainability,” she advocated for climate-smart agriculture practices that promote soil health, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve food security.

Professor Fawole highlighted the detrimental effects of excessive reliance on inorganic fertilizers, noting that while they may boost crop yields in the short term, they can lead to long-term soil degradation and pollution. She called for increased investment in organic farming practices, including the use of eco-friendly soil amendments and pesticides, to maintain soil fertility and protect crop health. Additionally, she recommended afforestation and the conservation of indigenous soil microorganisms as strategies to enhance ecological balance and support sustainable agriculture.
