– FG invests $250 million in solar mini-grids for universities and teaching hospitals
– Initiative aims to provide over 100MW of clean energy
- – Part of the Energizing Education Programme to enhance learning environments
The Nigerian government, through the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), has invested approximately \$250 million to deploy solar-powered mini-grids across 24 federal universities and four teaching hospitals. This initiative, under the Energizing Education Programme (EEP), aims to deliver over 100 megawatts of clean, reliable energy to these institutions.
The EEP, launched in 2018, seeks to improve electricity access in educational institutions, thereby enhancing academic performance and fostering innovation. The solar installations are expected to provide 24-hour power supply, reducing reliance on the national grid and lowering energy costs.
Institutions benefiting from this program include the University of Lagos, Obafemi Awolowo University, and the University of Abuja, among others. The REA has emphasized the importance of sustainability, urging beneficiary institutions to maintain the infrastructure to ensure long-term success.
This solar energy initiative aligns with Nigeria’s broader goals of expanding renewable energy access and promoting sustainable development across the country.
