- – Fourth equipment-related spill in Ogboinbiri since September 2024
– Environmental Defenders Network urges urgent pipeline maintenance
– Concerns rise as rainy season approaches, risking wider contamination
On May 3, 2025, a fresh oil spill occurred near Oando’s Ogboinbiri Flow Station in the deep swamp area of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, Bayelsa State. The rupture, attributed to equipment failure at the 6 o’clock position beneath the pipeline, marks the fourth such incident in the Ogboinbiri community since September 2024.
The Environmental Defenders Network (EDEN), through its Deputy Director, Comrade Alagoa Morris, expressed deep concern over the recurring spills. Morris, who also serves as the Technical Assistant to the Bayelsa State Governor on Environment, emphasized the need for regular integrity checks and timely replacement of aging pipelines to mitigate such incidents.
As the rainy season approaches, there is heightened urgency for prompt recovery of the spilled crude oil, comprehensive cleanup, and proper remediation of the affected environments to prevent further ecological damage.
