– Morocco invests $230m in mobile desalination to combat drought
– New dams, desalination plants boost national water security
– Revised water strategy responds to worsening climate impact
Morocco has launched a large-scale emergency water programme in response to severe drought and climate change. The initiative, worth over $230 million, includes 203 mobile desalination and demineralisation units, new dam construction, expanded irrigation systems, and major desalination plants in Dakhla and Jorf Lasfar.
The programme also supports rural communities with water trucks and tanks, while promoting wastewater reuse and efficient irrigation. Part of the broader 2020–2027 water strategy, the initiative aims to secure drinking water and improve climate resilience across the country.
