– NLC advocates for inclusion of marginalized groups in climate policies
– Trade unions call for review of Just Transition Guidelines
– ILO supports enhanced trade union advocacy for green jobs
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the Federal Government to ensure that national climate change policies are inclusive, urging the incorporation of voices from trade unions, women, youths, persons with disabilities, and other marginalized groups.
This appeal was made during the Post-COP29 Review Meeting held on April 25, 2025, in Abuja, organized by the NLC’s Climate Change, Green Jobs, and Just Transition Programme with support from the International Labour Organisation (ILO).
Emmanuel Ugboaja, NLC General Secretary, emphasized that excluding these critical voices perpetuates climate injustice at the national level. He highlighted the significant impact of climate change on workers, stating that “workers through their trade unions must be around the driving seat of climate change policy formulations and actions at all levels.”
The NLC also called for a review of the process for developing Nigeria’s Just Transition Guidelines to ensure they adequately address the needs and contributions of workers and their communities. The ILO’s Senior Specialist for Workers’ Activities, Inviolata Chinyangarara, reiterated the organization’s commitment to supporting trade unions in advocating for just transitions and green jobs at all levels.
