– Guterres calls for credible climate finance roadmap ahead of COP30
– Developed nations urged to double adaptation funding to $40 billion
– Global leaders convene to address climate finance and just transition
In a high-level virtual meeting on April 23, 2025, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, alongside Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, called on world leaders to develop a credible plan to mobilize $1.3 trillion annually by 2035 to support climate action in developing countries.
Guterres emphasized the urgency of fulfilling existing commitments, including doubling adaptation finance to at least $40 billion annually by this year.
He also highlighted the need for increased contributions to the Loss and Damage Fund established at COP28.
The meeting brought together leaders from major economies and climate-vulnerable nations, including representatives from the African Union, ASEAN, CARICOM, and AOSIS. Guterres stressed that despite global challenges, momentum must be maintained to ensure ambitious outcomes at COP30, scheduled for November 2025 in Belém, Brazil.
A special climate event is planned for September to further advance these goals and solidify commitments ahead of the summit.
