– Nigeria urged to prioritize inclusive, just energy transition
– Former Minister advocates for domestic financing and innovation in energy infrastructure
– Earth Day 2025 highlights need for collaborative climate action in Nigeria
At an Earth Day 2025 event in Abuja themed “Our Power, Our Planet: From Policy to Action,” stakeholders emphasized the necessity for collaborative investment in Nigeria’s renewable energy sector. Former Minister Mohammed Abdullahi highlighted the importance of innovation in energy infrastructure, optimal use of domestic financing, and harmonization of existing energy policies.
Abdullahi stressed that a just energy transition must be inclusive, ensuring opportunities for vulnerable communities and workers affected by the shift from fossil fuels. He noted that many Nigerians prioritize daily survival over environmental concerns, underscoring the need for government programs that empower citizens to adopt climate-friendly solutions like fuel-efficient cookstoves, LPG systems, solar installations, and electric or CNG vehicles.
The event, organized by Climate Justice, Creative Culture and Communities for Peace (CCC4Peace) in collaboration with various organizations, called for unified efforts from government, civil society, and individuals to drive Nigeria’s energy transition and address climate change challenges.
