Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has clarified his earlier remarks regarding the Siemens-led Presidential Power Initiative (PPI), emphasizing that significant progress has been made since the inauguration of President Bola Tinubu’s administration in May 2023. According to Bolaji Tunji, Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations to the Minister, the administration signed an Acceleration Agreement with Siemens Energy to expedite the project’s implementation. This move has led to tangible outcomes, including the installation and commissioning of ten power transformers and ten mobile substations across Nigeria.

The administration has also approved a new technical direction for the PPI, focusing Siemens Energy’s efforts on upgrading the transmission subsector through a turnkey approach. Meanwhile, other reputable Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) companies will handle the distribution scope. These strategic decisions aim to increase the national grid capacity by an additional 4,000MW by the end of 2026, with an aspirational target of an extra 2,000MW as directed by the Economic Management Team in 2024. Furthermore, the FGN Power Company has implemented several transmission projects nationwide, collectively increasing the transmission wheeling capacity by over 700MW for industrial clusters, businesses, universities, and homes.
