– Biodiversity’s Impact on Global Health
– One Health Approach in Biodiversity Conservation
– Kunming-Montreal Framework for Sustainable Development
On World Health Day, Astrid Schomaker, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity, emphasized biodiversity’s essential role in human well-being, planetary health, and economic prosperity. She highlighted that biodiversity provides critical resources such as food, medicine, clean air and water, and protection against natural disasters. Schomaker warned that human-induced pressures are pushing Earth’s systems toward dangerous tipping points, necessitating transformative changes in production and consumption patterns.
She advocated for the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the Global Action Plan on Biodiversity and Health, which promote a “One Health” approach recognizing the interconnectedness of ecosystem, animal, and human health. Schomaker concluded that halting biodiversity loss is central to ensuring global health and sustainability.
