Zambia’s candidate for the African Development Bank (AfDB) presidency, Dr. Samuel Maimbo, met with Mozambican President Daniel Chapo on April 4, 2025, to seek strategic advice and bolster diplomatic ties. Dr. Maimbo, endorsed by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) as its sole nominee for the AfDB presidency, emphasized the alignment of his vision for the bank with Mozambique’s development goals, focusing on rapid economic growth through strategic investments in high-impact sectors.
Dr. Maimbo’s extensive experience includes serving as Vice President for Budget, Performance Review, and Strategic Planning at the World Bank Group since July 2023. In this role, he has overseen the World Bank’s annual program budget, ensuring resources align with the institution’s strategic priorities.
The AfDB presidential election is scheduled for May 29, 2025, with candidates from Senegal, Chad, Mauritania, and South Africa also in contention. African countries control 60 percent of the vote, with non-African nations holding the remainder. Dr. Maimbo’s candidacy has received endorsements from both SADC and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), reflecting regional support for his leadership.
