– Impact of solar import ban on Nigeria’s renewable energy sector
– Strategies to enhance local solar manufacturing in Nigeria
– Balancing import restrictions and business environment in renewable energy policies
The Renewable Energy Association of Nigeria (REAN) has called on the government to reconsider its ban on solar imports, stressing the need to first create an enabling environment for local manufacturers.
While supporting the goal of boosting local production and energy security, REAN warned that the current challenges—such as high production costs, poor infrastructure, and limited raw materials—make immediate import restrictions counterproductive.
The group recommends a phased policy rollout, offering incentives like tax breaks and grants, and encouraging partnerships with international firms for technology transfer and capacity building.
