The Nigerian Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, has assured that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is being constructed to endure flooding for approximately 50 years. Speaking at a stakeholder engagement on Section 2 of the highway project in Lagos on April 6, 2025, Umahi emphasized that the pavement level would be elevated to counteract climate change impacts, stating, “We will make sure that our pavement level is going to counter any climate change.” The minister highlighted several design features aimed at enhancing the highway’s resilience and functionality:

– Elevated Pavement Level: The road’s pavement will be constructed at the height of a first-floor building to mitigate flood risks.

– Retaining Walls: Construction of retaining walls is underway to provide structural support and prevent erosion.

– Cable Ducts: Integrated cable ducts will allow utility companies to install services without excavating the road, preserving its integrity.

– CCTV Surveillance: Closed-circuit television cameras will be installed along the highway to ensure rapid response to incidents, with a targeted response time of less than five minutes.

– Evacuation Corridors: Designated evacuation routes will be established to enhance safety during emergencies. - **Carbon Credit Initiatives:** The use of concrete pavement is expected to reduce emissions, contributing to earning carbon credits.

– Aesthetic Enhancements: Tree planting along the corridor aims to improve the visual appeal and environmental quality of the highway.

Umahi also mentioned the construction of a flyover near the Dangote Refinery to facilitate the movement of trucks, describing it as a potential tourist attraction. Additionally, the project includes the development of relief centers equipped with amenities such as supermarkets and medical facilities. The minister commended Hitech Construction Company for their excellence and timely progress on the project.
