– Ogun Flood Risk: Communities Advised to Move to Safety
– Flooding Preparedness in Nigeria’s Ogun State
Ogun State Government has advised residents in 22 communities at risk of severe flooding to relocate to safer areas. The warning comes following predictions of intensified rainfall and rising water levels from the Ogun-Osun River Basin Authority.
Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, issued the advisory during a press briefing in Abeokuta. He noted that communities near the Ogun River, including Isheri, Akute, Warewa, and Kara, could face serious flooding due to the release of excess water from the Oyan Dam.
Oresanya urged residents to move temporarily to higher ground while government agencies continue to monitor the situation and provide relief measures. The state is working closely with emergency management bodies to mitigate potential damages and protect lives and property.
The government emphasized its commitment to safeguarding residents as the rainy season progresses. Ogun State has also activated its flood management and response teams to support affected areas.
