– Greenpeace Case Raises Concerns for Global Climate Advocacy
Environmental advocates have condemned the $660 million court ruling against Greenpeace USA, describing it as a major blow to global climate action. A coalition of civil society organizations, under the Climate Action Network (CAN), called the decision a threat to public interest advocacy.
The U.S. court ruled in favor of Resolute Forest Products, which accused Greenpeace of defamation and other claims. CAN described the case as a “Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation” (SLAPP) designed to intimidate environmental defenders.
The group argued that the judgment sets a dangerous precedent for companies targeting civil society groups that speak out against environmental degradation. CAN stressed that such legal actions hinder progress in tackling climate change and holding corporations accountable
.Global climate activists are now calling for increased protection for advocacy organizations and environmental defenders from legal harassment.
