– Protecting Nigeria’s Mangrove Ecosystems
The Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, has urged the protection of Niger Delta mangroves, warning against foreign exploitation under carbon credit schemes. He emphasized the ecological and economic importance of these ecosystems, which support biodiversity and local livelihoods. Speaking at The Mangrove Exhibition in Lagos, organized by Crimson Fusion Curators, he stressed the need for sustainable conservation efforts. The exhibition, featuring art by Dr. John DeBebs, aims to raise awareness about the threats facing mangroves. The Niger Delta’s mangroves, among Africa’s largest, play a crucial role in climate regulation. The Olu of Warri called for policies that prioritize environmental sustainability over short-term economic gains.
