The Nigerian government has reiterated its dedication to lowering carbon emissions within the industrial sector, aligning with its broader climate action strategies. This commitment is part of Nigeria’s adherence to the Paris Agreement, aiming for a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, with the potential to reach 45% reduction contingent upon international support.

In a significant policy shift, starting January 1, 2025, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission mandates that all applicants for oil licenses and permits must demonstrate evidence of low carbon emissions and possess a renewable energy program. This initiative underscores the nation’s commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2060.

Additionally, the government is promoting the conversion of petrol-powered vehicles to compressed natural gas (CNG) as a measure to reduce emissions in the transportation sector. The Presidential CNG Initiative aims to convert 150,000 vehicles by the end of the year, with a target of 1 million conversions by 2027, leveraging Nigeria’s substantial gas reserves.

These initiatives reflect Nigeria’s proactive approach to integrating sustainable practices across various sectors, reinforcing its role in global climate change mitigation efforts.
