The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) Rivers State Chapter marked World Engineering Day on March 4, 2025, by reaffirming their commitment to driving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Nigeria. The event, themed “Unleashing the Power of Engineers to Advocate the Sustainable Development Goals,” highlighted the crucial role of engineering in building a more sustainable and technologically advanced society. Dr. Adebisi Osim, APWEN President, emphasized that women engineers bring unique perspectives to problem-solving, making them vital to designing sustainable systems.
She reiterated that “STEM for All” remains a priority for APWEN, aiming to inspire young girls and boys, mentor future engineers, and promote inclusivity in the profession. Osim stressed that engineering is key to tackling global challenges such as poverty, climate change, clean water access, affordable energy, and resilient infrastructure. She pointed out that engineers contribute significantly to solutions like smart city designs, renewable energy innovations, and sustainable waste management, all of which align with the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda.
She called for stronger collaboration between public and private sectors, academia, policymakers, and industry leaders to create environments that foster engineering-driven solutions. She also urged increased support for research, innovation, and ethical practices that prioritize environmental sustainability, social impact, and economic growth. APWEN’s continued advocacy reinforces the essential role of engineers, especially women, in shaping a sustainable future for Nigeria and the world.
