UNFCCC and Nigeria Climate Strategy

Simon Stiell, the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), is undertaking a four-day visit to Nigeria to discuss how robust climate strategies can drive the nation’s economic growth. During his stay from March 4 to 7, 2025, Stiell will engage with government officials, business leaders, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders.

The visit commences in Abuja, where Stiell will meet with key government representatives and civil society members to deliberate on Nigeria’s climate initiatives and their potential to unlock economic opportunities. Following this, on March 6, he will participate in a symposium titled “Intersecting Worlds of Climate Change, Mangrove, and Art” at the Lekki Conservation Centre in Lagos. Here, he is scheduled to deliver a speech highlighting how Nigeria’s updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) can stimulate economic development, alleviate poverty, and ensure energy access for all.

Stiell aims to underscore the importance of environmental conservation in enhancing Nigeria’s resilience to climate-induced extreme weather events. Initiatives such as preserving mangrove forests to protect coastal regions from flooding and advancing the Great Green Wall project in the Sahel to restore degraded lands are pivotal for adapting to climate impacts on communities, agriculture, and infrastructure.

The Executive Secretary’s visit signifies the UNFCCC’s commitment to supporting Nigeria in implementing effective climate actions that align with sustainable economic growth and development objectives.
