The Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP) has expressed concern over the ineffective enforcement of urban and regional planning laws in Nigeria’s major cities, particularly within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This lapse has led to widespread neglect of approved master plans and a surge in unauthorized constructions. Queen Phillips, the newly inaugurated Chairman of NITP’s FCT Chapter, highlighted these challenges during her swearing-in ceremony on February 26, 2025, in Abuja. She emphasized that the inadequate implementation of urban planning regulations hampers Nigeria’s sustainable development efforts. Phillips outlined her administration’s commitment to strengthening professionalism through continuous workshops and training, aiming to equip members with modern planning skills. She also called for collaborative efforts to address the proliferation of illegal structures, noting that effective enforcement and public awareness are crucial to restoring order and fostering socio-economic growth in urban areas.
Phillips urged residents to support the FCT administration’s initiatives to transform Abuja into a world-class city. NITP National President, Dr. Ogbonna Chime, underscored the vital role of town planners in societal development and stressed the need to protect professionals in the field, citing recent attacks on planners during their duties. He commended FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for his prompt response to such incidents. Former FCT Permanent Secretary, Mr. Olusegun Adekunle, highlighted the importance of professional support for government efforts to attract foreign investment. Outgoing Chairman, Mrs. Lami Ayuba, expressed gratitude for the support received during her tenure.
