Focus on Sustainable Practices and Economic Growth

The United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has pledged £204 million to enhance Nigeria’s agriculture through the Propcom+ programme. This eight-year initiative, running from 2023 to 2030, focuses on promoting climate-resilient agricultural practices and supporting smallholders and SMEs in regions affected by conflict and climate change.

The programme aims to increase the incomes and resilience of 3.79 million vulnerable Nigerians, with a commitment that 50% of the beneficiaries will be women. Currently active in states including Kano, Kaduna, Jigawa, Bauchi, Plateau, Gombe, and Adamawa, Propcom+ has recently expanded to Katsina State. The programme’s objectives include boosting productivity, improving food security, enhancing climate resilience, reducing emissions, and protecting natural ecosystems.

By addressing challenges such as low agricultural productivity, resource-based conflicts, and climate change impacts, Propcom+ seeks to transform Nigeria’s rural economy and promote sustainable development. citeturn0search0In addition to the Propcom+ initiative, the UK has recently invested $40.5 million in Nigeria’s cocoa sector, further demonstrating its commitment to supporting the country’s agricultural development. citeturn0search8navlistUK Invests in Nigeria’s Cocoa Sectorturn0search8
